Your brand can remain visible online and still disappear from AI answers overnight.
In August 2026, something significant happened to Reddit’s visibility in ChatGPT. According to a new OtterlyAI analysis, the number of Reddit citations ChatGPT generated fell by at least 73.4% within days.
For brands investing in AI visibility, this warns of the reputational risks of relying too heavily on one platform, one source type, or one AI engine.
Reddit Citations Fell, But ChatGPT Did Not Stop Citing Sources
OtterlyAI examined 16 brand reports across 14 industries, covering companies and organizations such as Amazon, Apple, Tesla, Netflix, Siemens, Bayer and the American Red Cross.
Every report recorded a decline in ChatGPT citations linking to Reddit. Three — Bayer, Udemy and the American Red Cross — lost them entirely during the four days following 14 August.
The average number of daily Reddit citations fell from 497 to 132. However, ChatGPT’s overall citation volume increased by 3.5%, from approximately 36,100 to 37,400 citations per day.
This distinction matters. Reddit did not lose visibility because ChatGPT was producing fewer citations. The AI system continued citing sources but selected different ones.
Other engines, including Google AI Mode, Gemini, and Perplexity, reduced Reddit citations by only 0.6% during the same period. That suggests the shift was specific to ChatGPT, not the result of Reddit removing content.
The cause has not been officially confirmed. Gizmodo reported that a change in how ChatGPT retrieves information may have contributed to the decline, but OpenAI had not explained it at the time of publication.
What Replaced Reddit?
OtterlyAI found that ChatGPT increasingly selected official company pages, commercial websites, government resources, documentation, and reference sources.
Official brand and competitor pages gained citations in 10 of the 15 reports where they appeared. Reference and encyclopedia sources increased in four out of five relevant reports. Meanwhile, news and media sources declined in 11 of 12 reports.
In other words, ChatGPT appeared to shift away from online discussion and journalism toward more canonical, first-party information.
For companies, this creates both an opportunity and a risk.
A brand with accurate service pages, clear corporate information, expert content, structured documentation and consistent executive profiles may become easier for AI systems to understand and cite. A company with an outdated, incomplete or contradictory digital profile may leave the model with insufficient evidence — or allow competitor pages and third-party sources to define it instead.
AI Visibility Cannot Depend On One Platform
Many companies have treated Reddit, Wikipedia, review platforms, or selected media publications as shortcuts to AI visibility. The August shift demonstrates how fragile that approach can be.
A mention on an influential platform is not an owned reputation asset. Its visibility depends on another company’s rules, another platform’s stability, and an AI engine’s changing retrieval preferences.
Even Reddit’s commercial relationship with OpenAI did not guarantee continued citation visibility. Access to content for model training does not necessarily determine which sources will appear in live AI-generated answers.
The same principle applies to reputation more broadly: if one source disappears, the company’s credibility should not disappear with it.
What Companies Should Do Now
Businesses should avoid rebuilding their entire GEO strategy around a short-term change. Instead, they should strengthen the wider information environment that supports their reputation:
- monitor brand descriptions and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI experiences separately;
- identify whether AI visibility depends disproportionately on one platform;
- maintain accurate corporate, service, leadership and contact pages;
- publish original expert content connected to identifiable authors;
- keep business directories, media profiles and third-party references consistent;
- compare what the company says about itself with what independent sources confirm;
- track citation changes alongside the actual answers AI systems generate.
The objective is not to manipulate one model. It is to build a clear, verifiable digital profile so the company remains understandable when citation patterns change.
AI visibility is rented. A structured reputation is an asset.
